Ascent.
A couple of weeks back I was alerted to the fact the new number one in the UK music charts was this atrocity called The Crazy Frog (my lord, it even has a Wikipedia entry), with a rendition of the classic Beverly Hills Cop tune. Now, this Crazy Frog version is little more than 4 minute long ringtone for your cellphone, but still it managed to make its way to the top spot. The fact that it kept Coldplay's latest outing off the top spot, with a 'singles sold' ratio of four to one, says it all, I think.
Anyway, that was all the way over in the UK, but as soon as I heard the news, I said to myself, and to several friend; 'Give it a month, and that bastard will be topping our charts, too.' Well, three weeks passed without any sightings of a Frog, and I started believing in the Dutch; are we clever enough not to let this happen? Is our love for music bigger than the commercialism behind this musical monstrosity? It would seem so.
And then today happened. While I'm at the job on saturdays, the radio is always tuned in to the weekly charts, the top 40. And guess who was today's first new entry, in at #37? Yup, you guessed it. It's here.
But still, it's not as bad as it could have been - I expected it to shoot straight through to the top ten, so #37 is a pretty weak start. Could there still be hope? I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
We've seen some hideous crap topping our charts, over here in Dutchland, but I'm telling you; if this makes it to the top spot, god forbid, then something I've been saying for ages now has finally come true. Music is dying.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheers
