Rare, medium, or well done?
I'm a skeptic at heart. I have serious trouble with believing things I cannot see with my own eyes. Such as religion. Such as supernatural phenomena. Because dealing with religion on this weblog would be biting off more than I can chew, I'll restict myself to the supernatural for now.
Today I received an email from a friend, in which she told me that her sister had been talking to a medium, a psychic, for some television show, and that the psychic had told her sister things about her deceased mother; things understandably got emotional. The friend told me, in the email, that she never used to believe in stuff like that, but that, because of this experience her sister had concerning their mother, she's having second thoughts.
Dictionary.com's definition of 'medium'
"A person thought to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension. Also called psychic."
My definition of 'medium'
"A person who abuses his or her perceptive and observational talents to feed off the emotional vulnerability of his victims. Usually for television or financial gain."
As you can see, I'm not buying into this 'communicating with the deceased'-malarkey. I don't believe for a second that this medium can somehow reach the realm of the dead and talk to whomever he wants. I believe a medium is an admittedly intelligent person, who was trained to extrapolate information during a seemingly normal conversation, paying attention to details and minutia and observing the other's reactions and physical and verbal feedback, so that he or she can abuse the wants and needs of the willing victim, usually by telling them several sweeping generalisaions about deceased relatives, to increase the emotional impact.
Tell me my deceased mother loves me doesn't sway me; tell me my deceased mother's combination to her high school locker, and we'll talk.
Until then, stay out of my head.
Cheers
Ps: To the friend, should she read this - you know I don't mean any offense toward either you, or your sister. Please, take none.

I know it is wisfful thinking, but what if?
What if, indeed.
All the luck with it, and let me know. I may be a skeptic, but I'm a curious one.
Glad you're not offended.

I saw a show where a 'psychic' took some car keys from the audience members and then went and found the cars with his powers. Of course he took the people with him, as, as you said, he just understands how people behave, and by their actions he could figure out which car was theirs. The "ford" on the key probably narrowed it down a bit too.
I bet he could not have done it had those people not been with him.
Cheers
