Trailer trash.

Well, not trash, really, but I just liked the alliteration, so shut the fuck up. Here are some of the films I'm really looking forward to, coming out in 2005.

□□ □□ □□

First off, the 'Okay' films - the films I will probably go see but which will not rock my film-infested world:

The Jacket

The film centers on a military veteran who returns to his native Vermont suffering from bouts of amnesia. When he is accused of murder and lands in an asylum, a well-meaning doctor puts him on a heavy course of experimental drugs, restrains him in a jacket-like device, and locks him away in a body drawer of the basement morgue. The process sends him on a journey into the future, where he can foresee his death (but not who did it or how) in four day's time. Now the only question that matters is: can the woman he meets in the future save him?

□□ □□ □□
The Interpreter

Political intrigue and deception unfold inside the United Nations, where an FBI agent (Penn) is assigned to protect an interpreter (Kidman) who overhears an assassination plot.

□□ □□ □□
The Fantastic Four

When an experimental space voyage goes awry, four people are changed by cosmic rays. Reed Richards, inventor and leader of the group gains the ability to stretch his body, and takes the name, Mr. Fantastic. His girlfriend, Sue Storm, gains the ability to turn invisible and create force fields, calling herself the Invisible Woman. Her younger brother Johnny Storm gains the ability to control fire, including covering his own body with flame, becoming the Human Torch. Pilot Ben Grimm is turned into a super-strong rock creature calling himself Thing. Together, they use their unique powers to explore the strange aspects of the world, and to foil the evil plans of Doctor Doom.

□□ □□ □□
The Weather Man

A weather man who lives with his wife and kids in Chicago must deal with problems which arise from wanting to move to New York.

□□ □□ □□
Be Cool

Disenchanted with the movie industry, Chili Palmer (John Travolta) tries the music industry, meeting and romancing a widow of a music exec (Uma Thurman) on the way.

□□ □□ □□
Alone in the Dark

Edward Carnby (Slater), detective of the paranormal, unexplained and supernatural, investigates a mystery (the recent death of a friend) with clues leading to "Shadow Island" that brings him face to face with bizarre horrors that prove both psychologically disturbing and lethal, as he discovers that evil demons worshiped by an ancient culture called the Abskani are planning on coming back to life in the 21st century to once again take over the world... and only he and a young genius anthropologist with an incredible memory (and his ex-girlfriend), Aline Cedrac (Reid), stand in their way, at a gateway to hell. Standing in Carnby's way, however, is the impact that a brief encounter with an evil spirit called the Queen had upon his mind, as he slowly finds himself overpowered by the forces of darkness as they eat away at his very sanity.

□□ □□ □□

Okay, now for the films that will be good, good, gooooooood:

Robots

Even in a world populated entirely by mechanical beings Rodney Copperbottom is considered a genius inventor. Rodney dreams of two things, making the world a better place and meeting his idol, the master inventor Bigweld (Brooks). On his journey he encounters Cappy, a beautiful executive `bot with whom Rodney is instantly smitten, the nefarious corporate tyrant Ratchet (Kinnear) who locks horns with Rodney, and a group of misfit `bots known as the Rusties, led by Fender and Piper Pinwheeler.

□□ □□ □□
Flight of the Phoenix

A group of air crash survivors are stranded in the Mongolian desert with no chance of rescue. Facing a brutal environment, dwindling resources, and an attack by desert smugglers, they realize their only hope is doing the impossible... building a new plane from the wreckage of the old one.

□□ □□ □□
Kingdom of Heaven

During the Crusades of the 12th Century, Balian of Ibelin (Bloom), a young blacksmith in Jerusalem, rises to protect his people from foreign invaders.

□□ □□ □□

Brace yourselves, it's time for the stuff that will blow your socks off:

The Final Cut

The story is set in a world where implanted microchips can record all moments of an individual's life. The chips are removed upon death so the images can be edited into something of a highlight reel for loved ones who want to remember the deceased. Caviezel portrays the leader of the organization that opposes this technology's development.

□□ □□ □□
Constatine

John Constantine (Keanu) is a world-travelling, mage-like misfit who investigates supernatural mysteries and the like, walking a thin line between evil and good. Constantine then teams up with a female police detective, Angela(Weisz), who seeks Constantine's help while investigating the suicide-like death of her twin sister...

□□ □□ □□
Batman Begins

The beginning of the Dark Knight saga. Bruce Wayne (Batman) must do battle with the wicked Ra's Al Ghul, and the infamous Dr. Jonathan Crane, AKA The Scarecrow. The Caped Crusader tracks Al Ghul to the city of London where he must confront the criminal mastermind.

□□ □□ □□
Sin City

An adaptation of Frank Miller's stories based in a morally bankrupt metropolis. Chief amongst the town's residents is Marv (Rourke), who trawls the darkest areas of town looking for the person who murdered Goldie (King) while she lay sleeping in his bed.

□□ □□ □□
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Mere seconds before the Earth is to be demolished by an alien construction crew, journeyman Arthur Dent is swept off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher penning a new edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

□□ □□ □□

And finally, as the fucking icing on the fucking cake - this will be the next Lord of the Rings:

The Chronicles of Narnia; the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Four London children are sent to a professors country home in order for protection during World War II. There they find a magic wardrobe which leads to a mystical land called Narnia, which is being ruled by an evil witch. To defeat the Witch, they must join forces with Aslan, the lion God of Narnia, and the great battle between good and evil. This is not so much a trailer as a small featurette.

You guessed it, it's gonna be a good year.

Cheers

True, to some extent, but that doesn't neccesarily have to be a bad thing - there are so many good books out there, as of yet undiscovered by Hollywood.

Why put a lot of effort in creating a new story when there's a goldmine of stories just 'round the corner, in the local bookshop?

Not that I don't support original ideas, don't get me wrong. It's just that adaptations can turn out to be excellent films.

Yup, I'm especially looking forward to Sin City and The Final Cut (and The Hitchhiker's Guide, but I think I've made that clear already).

Can't wait.
