Boy/Girl.

Boy meets Girl. Boy likes Girl. Boy takes the plunge and tells Girl he likes her. Girl tells Boy that she does not like him in that way. Girl likes Another Boy in that way. Another Boy is not yet aware of this.

Boy understands. Boy accepts. Boy thinks about it and wishes Girl all the best with her feelings for Another Boy. Boy asks Girl to promise to let him know if and when Girl and Another Boy get together. Girl promises. Boy asks one more time, just to make sure. Girl promises again.

(You can see where this is going. I will carry on, none the less.)

Girl and Another Boy eventually get together, fall in love, form a couple. Girl remembers the promise but decides to ignore it. Girl decides it is in everyone's best interest if she does not tell. Girl even unflinchingly denies when Boy suspects and asks. Girl and Another Boy decide that the best way to inform Boy of these new developments is to wait two months before cuddling and kissing in front of Boy's eyes. Boy now knows. Boy now cannot not know.

Boy tries to understand, but in the end Boy has to acknowledge that Girl is spectacularly callous, intentionally and unnecessarily hurtful and blindly dismissive of other people's feelings. Not to mention a surprisingly good liar. Boy is surprised that he had not picked up on these fundamental character flaws in past months.

Boy decides to be the better man and wishes Girl and Another Boy all the happiness they deserve. Boy will attempt to stay out of Girls way from here on in.

Boy will move on.

The end.

It is moments like this that remind me of that great Dickens quote....

"May you be happy in the life you have chosen."

Indeed.

When I say I wish them all the happiness they deserve, I chose my words carefully.
